Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

122 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied that the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness is intact and on target; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14446/01]

The PPF is a 33 month programme which covers the period 2000-2002. The programme continues to be implemented and to date four progress reports have been presented to the Houses of the Oireachtas and to the social partners. Agreement was reached in December 2000 on adjustments to the pay terms of the agreement and renewed emphasis placed on the promotion of economic stability, improved living standards and a strengthening of the partnership process.

Ceist:

123 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the factors which have been identified as presenting a threat to the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14447/01]

The Programme for Prosperity and Fairness aims to keep our economy competitive, provide a strong basis for further economic prosperity, improve living standards and promote social inclusion. It is the Government's view that adherence to the terms of the PPF is the best way of sustaining the economic and social progress that we have achieved.

Departure from the terms of the PPF in the form of unsustainable wage and cost developments would threaten our economic prosperity. The Government has made it clear that it cannot countenance claims by any group outside the PPF framework and the benchmarking process for which it provides.
