Vol. 536 No. 4

Written Answers. - Bank Charges.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

73 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the extent to which she continues to monitor charges for services by banks, finance and credit card companies; if she has satisfied herself that all such charges are in accordance with regulations; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14451/01]

Under section 149 of the Consumer Credit Act 1995, the Director of Consumer Affairs has responsibility for regulating charges imposed on customers by financial institutions. No such institution can either increase existing charges or introduce new charges without first notifying the Director of Consumer Affairs and receiving her approval.

Might I take this opportunity to mention that policy responsibility for the 1995 Act will be transferred to the Minister for Finance in the context of the establishment or the Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority.
