Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Dinny McGinley

Ceist:

316 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the nature of the works which have been carried out in recent years on the restoration of Donegal Castle; and if she would consider sanctioning a grant to reroof the main hall of the castle. [15646/01]

Under the 1995 to 1999 European Operational Programme for Tourism extensive restoration works were carried out at Donegal Castle. These works have added considerably to the visitor experience at this important site by opening up all areas of the castle to the public and allowing for the provision of exhibitions. The cost of these works was £420,000. I have again committed further resources under the national development plan for the provision of toilet facilities, which will complete the visitor services available at Donegal Castle.

The question of the reroofing of the Manor House is something that has been raised on a number of occasions in recent times. While my Department has no plans to undertake this work at present it is something that is under constant review.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

317 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands when St. John's Castle, Dungarvan, County Waterford, will be opened to the public. [15806/01]

Recruitment of guides for St. John's Castle is currently under way and I hope to be in a position to open the castle for guided tours at the end of June.
