Vol. 537 No. 2

Written Answers. - Education Spending.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

413 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will give details of the spending on primary, secondary and third level education for each year since 1996 in nominal terms, as deflated by the price index for Government services from the national accounts, and as a proportion of GDP; and if he will provide the projections for 2001. [15886/01]

The information requested relating to gross expenditure for each level of education for the years 1996 to 2001 is contained in the following table. The figures for 2000 and 2001 are based on the provisional out-turn and the 2001 Revised Estimates, respectively. The number of students has dropped significantly from 478,700 in 1996 to 437,900 in 2001 at first level and from 370,000 in 1996 to 345,400 in 2001 at second level. The Government has, however, substantially increased investment in students' education at all levels, including third level.
