Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - Slipways Construction.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

274 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will arrange for the immediate building of adequate slipways at Doran's Point and Gob na Dubh; and if she will arrange for immediate anti-erosion work which is necessary to preserve the ESB lines between Ballycroy and Inishbiggle and to preserve the future slipways, to be carried out. [17990/01]

As previously stated in my reply to Question No. 484 of 1 May 2001, in October 1999 my Department received an application from Mayo County Council for funding to assist with the cost of constructing 55 metre slipways at Doran's Point on the mainland and at Gob na Dubh on Inishbiggle together with associated road improvement and coastal protection works, including those to which the Deputy refers, at an estimated total cost of £315,000. The issue of preservation of the ESB lines is not a matter for my Department but is, naturally, a matter for the ESB. After discussions with Mayo County Council and, in view of the major expenditure of £1.45 million which has been approved by my Department for the construction of a cable car serving this island, the county council was requested to submit a revised application to include the provision of 30 metre slipways at Gob na Dubh and Doran's Point and also the associated coastal protection works. It is understood that the council has appointed a consultant to design and develop this project. However, to date, no revised application has been received by my Department.
