Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sheep Tagging.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

197 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will consider amending the sheep tagging regulations to accommodate the unique situation of sheep farmers with mountainous land; and if he will allow them a concession of tagging the animals only when they are leaving their farms. [19625/01]

Under the provisions of the national sheep identification system – NSIS – flock owners are required to tag their sheep on movement from farms from 21 June 2001. All sheep remaining on the farm must be tagged before the 15 December 2001. The arrangements that have been introduced are required to ensure that there is full traceability for all sheep on an individual animal basis.
