Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Water Quality.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

359 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has issued instructions or directions or taken initiatives to prevent pollution of rivers or waterways during the course of the summer months in 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20174/01]

I refer to the reply to Question No. 198 of 30 May 2001 which outlines the substantial range of measures in place and being developed to protect and improve water quality.

I made regulations on 14 June 2001 to designate 30 additional water bodies as sensitive areas for the purposes of urban waste water treatment. Tertiary treatment will be provided for all discharges into these waters from large waste water treatment plants and will provide for removal of phosphorus or nitrogen as appropriate.

At this time of year it is my practice in public statements, at meetings and functions and on other appropriate occasions, to emphasise the need for the greatest care to protect water quality over the summer months. As has been my usual practice, I have also issued a circular letter to local authorities advising them of the need for heightened water quality, for awareness and for particular vigilance in respect of activities with potential for increased impact in low water conditions.
Question No. 360 answered with Question No. 354.
