Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

398 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason a public monument (detail supplied) in County Donegal is being closed after 6 p.m.; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20162/01]

My Department is at present undertaking essential remedial works to repair damage to the monument in question which resulted from vandalism at the site earlier this year. In order to prevent the possibility of further damage being caused at the site during the duration of these works, my Department made a decision to limit access to the site for visitors to the periods 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, periods during which the Department is in a position to supervise the site.

My Department is conscious of the importance of the site both to the local community and to visitors to the area, and it was for this reason that my officials met with the members of Donegal County Council from the area on 14 May to advise them of the planned works and to provide details of the timing of the necessary road closures.
