Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

John Bruton

Ceist:

424 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans he has to provide a Garda station in Laytown, Count Meath; if additional gardaí will be allocated to the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19778/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in excess of £47,000 has been expended on work to the Garda station in Laytown, County Meath in relation to subsidence and damp proofing. There are no plans, at present, to provide a new station at Laytown. I am further informed that the current strength of Laytown station at 29 June 2001 is eight for covering all ranks. Local Garda management is satisfied that this strength is adequate in meeting the present policing needs of the area. However, the situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available the needs of the Laytown area will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
