Vol. 540 No. 1

Written Answers. - Strategic Development Zones.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

75 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a statement on the recent designation of strategic development zones for residential development under Part IX of the Planning and Development Act, 2000; when it is proposed to designate further zones; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19713/01]

In accordance with Part IX of the Planning and Development Act, 2000, Government Orders were made on 19 June 2001 designating three sites as strategic development zones for residential development designed to support the provision of almost 12,000 housing units in the Dublin and mid-east regions.

The three sites that have been designated are Adamstown in Lucan which has the capacity to deliver up to 8,000 housing units, Hansfield in Blanchardstown which has the capacity to deliver about 2,500 housing units and Clonmagadden Valley in Navan which has the capacity to provide about 1,400 housing units. My Department has written to the three local authorities concerned asking them to put in train the necessary work to advance the preparation of planning schemes and the delivery of infrastructure and other work necessary for the development of these sites.

As indicated in my statement welcoming the Government's decision, the designation of these sites should be viewed against the backdrop of very positive progress in advancing the planning of major residential sites in Dublin since the proposal to use strategic development zones for residential development was first conceived last year. Local area plans have been finalised for key residential sites in Dublin city and county including the North Fringe, Pelletstown, Stepaside, Killinarden/ Kiltipper, Ballycullen/Stocking Lane, Lusk, Swords North, Diswellstown/Porterstown/Tyrellstown and the Phoenix Park Racecourse. I have already stated that I will be keeping progress on the development of these sites under review and I am prepared to bring further proposals to Government at a later stage for the designation of additional sites as strategic development zones as necessary.
