Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Constitutional Referendum.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

402 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if a referendum on abortion will take place in 2001; and if a clear choice will be given. [21822/01]

On 2 October 2001 the Government published the Twenty-fifth Amendment of the Constitution (Protection of Human Life in Pregnancy) Bill, 2001, which contains detailed proposals for a constitutional referendum and legislation on the protection of human life in pregnancy. The Bill will be introduced in the Oireachtas later in the current session. The Government intends to allow sufficient time for a detailed public debate on its proposals, before making a decision on a possible referendum date.
