Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Funding.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

851 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide financial support for a non-profit organisation (details supplied). [21057/01]

Although I am aware of the organisation to which the Deputy refers, my Department has not received an application for State funding from this service. Indeed, the organisation's publicity material proclaims itself to be ". . . a voluntary, non-profit, non-commercial service that does not receive any assistance or funding from any State agency or body."

In general, the funding of support facilities for the families of missing persons is not a function that would normally fall within my functional remit. However, in deference to previously expressed concerns on this matter, I have already instructed my Department to examine the possibility of how this may be brought about and, in this regard, it is currently in discussions with a separate voluntary organisation. Finally, I would wish to point out that approximately 99% of reported missing persons in any given year are located by year end and only a very small proportion of persons who go missing do so in circumstances which would be of concern to the Garda Síochána.

Question No. 852 answered with Question No. 121.
