Vol. 541 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Personnel.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

951 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of personnel in the Garda Síochána; the total number of gardaí available for operational duties; the total number of gardaí involved solely in clerical or administrative duties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22379/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources, that the current strength of the Garda Síochána, as at 2 October 2001, is 11,802, all of whom are available for operational duties. I am further informed that there are currently 339 Garda personnel allocated to administrative duties. I should point out that the above figures refer to members of the Garda Síochána only and do not include civilian support staff.
