Vol. 542 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

55 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason mullet fishing and eel fishing have been prohibited above Blackrock Castle, County Cork, in recent times. [23538/01]

I am not aware of any specific pro hibition on angling for mullet or eel on the River Lee above Blackrock Castle at this time.

The Deputy may be referring to a by-law introduced earlier this year prohibiting angling from any bridge over the River Lee downstream of the Cork water works weir during the period from 23 July 2001 to 20 August 2001. I made this by-law at the request of the South-Western Regional Fisheries Board for the purpose of controlling the illegal practice of stroke hauling fish that was taking place from those bridges at that time.
