Vol. 542 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

170 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if applicants for the Garda Síochána who were refused admission over the past five years on height grounds will be recalled for interview for the next round of recruitment into the force following the introduction of new regulations regarding height. [24474/01]

Amendments to the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, to provide, inter alia, for the abolition of the height requirement for entry to the Garda Síochána, will be submitted to the Government for approval very shortly. Persons who previously applied to join the Garda Síochána but did not meet the criteria for recruitment of trainees in force at that time, such as the height requirement, are free to apply again provided they meet all of the requirements in force in terms of age, education etc., at the time of a new competition.
