Ceist:

224 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the State and semi-State bodies under his aegis; the chief executive officers and chairmen of each body; and the date of their appointment. [29295/01]

The statutory agencies operating under the aegis of my Department are the Pensions Board, the Combat Poverty Agency, Comhairle, the Social Welfare Tribunal and the Commissioners of Charitable Donations and Bequests for Ireland.

The Pensions Board was established in December 1990 under the Pensions Act, 1990. The role of the board is to monitor and supervise the provisions of the Pensions Act, 1990, relating to occupational pensions and to advise the Minister on all matters relating to its functions and on matters relating to pensions generally.

Ms Anne Maher is the chief executive officer and was appointed on 1 July 1996. Ms Grainne Clohessy is the chairperson and was appointed on 21 December 2000.

The Combat Poverty Agency – CPA – was established in September 1986 under the Combat Poverty Agency Act, 1986. The main functions of the agency are to advise the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs on all aspects of economic and social planning in relation to poverty, to initiate and evaluate measures aimed at overcoming poverty and to promote greater public understanding of the nature, causes and extent of poverty and the measures necessary to overcome poverty.

Ms Helen Johnson is the chief executive officer and was appointed on 21 July 2001. Mr. Brian Duncan is the chairperson and was appointed on 22 June 2001.

Comhairle has responsibility for the provision of independent information, advice and advocacy services to all citizens. It was established in June 2000 and replaced the National Social Service Board and certain functions of the National Rehabilitation Board.

Ms Leonie Lunney is the chief executive officer and was appointed on 12 June 2000. Mr. Dónal De Buitléir is the chairperson and was appointed on 12 June 2000.

The Social Welfare Tribunal is a statutory body set up in 1982 to deal with cases where entitlement to unemployment benefit or assistance is refused due to an involvement in a trade dispute. It comprises a chairperson and four ordinary members, two of whom are representative of workers and two representative of employers.

Secretarial services are provided by my Department. The position of chairperson of the tribunal is currently vacant.

The Commissioners of Charitable Donations and Bequests for Ireland is a statutory body with responsibility for overseeing the general administration of charities. The duties of the commissioners are set out in the Charities Acts. The commissioners do not employ a chief executive officer. Mr. Justice Francis D. Murphy is the chairperson and was appointed on 27 March 2001.
