Tom Enright

Ceist:

147 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that in a recent INTO survey of primary schools, it found that Camross national school, Portlaoise, County Laois, was included in the list of schools which had inadequate facilities (details supplied); and his plans to provide proper education facilities at this school. [32046/01]

Architectural planning in respect of a project to upgrade and extend Camross national school is under way. It is not possible at this stage to say when the project will go on site.

Many of the issues referred to by the Deputy in the details supplied are appropriately addressed through the grant scheme for minor works to national school properties. Under this scheme recognised primary schools receive an annual grant, currently set at £3,000 plus £10 per pupil.

149 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that in a recent survey of primary schools here by the INTO, it found that Lumcloon national school, Cloghan, County Offaly, was included in the list of schools which had inadequate facilities (details supplied); and his plans to provide proper education facilities at this school. [32048/01]

A building project to provide three new classrooms and ancillary accommodation at Lumcloon national school was approved by the building unit of my Department and is currently at stage 3 of the architectural planning process. Recently the school authorities requested that an additional classroom be included in the current proposed building project. As a result of this request a review of the accommodation requirements of the school is being carried out by the planning section of my Department. Factors such as demographic trends and the availability of places in other schools in the area will be taken into consideration in the course of this review.

A decision on this matter will be made and notified to the school authorities as soon as possible.
