Vol. 547 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driving Licences.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

783 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the regulations regarding the necessity for persons (details supplied) to have eye tests before renewal of drivers' licences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2327/02]

Irish driver licensing regulations, which incorporate EU based requirements, provide that all applicants applying for or renewing higher category licences – C1, C, D1, D, EC1, EC, ED1 or ED – for trucks and buses must submit a medical report. In addition, an application by persons aged 70 years or more for the grant or renewal of an ordinary, class B, driving licence or a provisional licence must be accompanied by a medical report, which includes certification as regards minimum physical standards including eyesight. Applicants for all categories of provisional licence must, regardless of age, submit an eyesight report where a further medical report is not required.
