Vol. 547 No. 2

Written Answers. - Early School Leavers.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

62 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to a recent report by a person (details supplied) which indicated that 18% of students leave school without a leaving certificate and 3% leave without qualifications, he will provide a breakdown for these figures on a county basis for each of the past three years. [2795/02]

The report referred to by the Deputy has not been provided to my Department. Accordingly, I am not in a position to comment on the percentage rates in question.

My Department is currently in the process of finalising a comprehensive report in relation to retention rates in post-primary schools. The report will deal specifically with pupils who commenced year one of the junior cycle as part of their full-time education and were enrolled in post-primary schools on 30 September 1994. It is intended to publish the report when complete. The breakdown on a county basis for each of the cohort of pupils enrolled in post-primary schools on 30 September 1992, 1993 and 1994 is not readily available. I have asked my officials to compile this information and to forward it to the Deputy as soon as possible.
