Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

Ceist:

143 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the extent to which variations in public liability or other insurance costs exist on a county by county basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3628/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 142 and 143 together.

Insurance premiums are normally based on insurers' underwriting experience, including trends in the level, frequency and cost of claims, for particular risks and classes of risk. Differences in the underwriting experience may mean that differences in premiums occur between counties.

In accordance with EU law, we cannot require insurance companies to notify us of premium rates and our Department does not have authoritative statistics on premiums currently available.
