Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Libraries.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

445 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her Department has a library or if another library comes under the aegis of her Department; the way in which staff are recruited to such libraries; if there are vacancies at the present time; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7646/02]

My Department is directly responsible for the staffing of the National Library of Ireland. The recruitment of these staff is carried out both through the Office of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission and directly by my Department. There are currently two vacant posts – one part time – in the National Library and these are at the clerical and library assistant levels.

There is also a library in the National Botanic Gardens which serves the staff of the Botanic Gardens, members of the public who wish, by arrangement, to carry out research and students at the Teagasc College of Horticulture at the Botanic Gardens. The staff of this library are recruited through the Office of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission. At present there are no vacancies in this library.

There are also some collections of reference materials which are held by various divisions in my Department but these would not be classified as libraries.
