Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Residential Institutions Redress.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

515 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science the basis on which former pupils of three schools for the deaf (details supplied) are excluded under the terms of the Residential Institutions Redress Bill, 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9969/02]

The Schedule of residential institutions as currently listed in the Residential Institutions Redress Bill, 2001, is not a finite list. The current Bill contains the names of some 138 industrial schools, special schools, residential institutions and care centres in which children were resident.

Following enactment of the Residential Institutions Redress Bill, section 4 of the then Act allows that the Minister may, by order, insert into the Schedule any further institutions in which children were placed and resident and in respect of which a public body had a regulatory or inspection function.
