Vol. 551 No. 3

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

214 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department has evaluated the tenders in respect of closed circuit television cameras for Limerick City; when he expects installation of the cameras to commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10413/02]

The contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of a Garda CCTV system in Limerick City – and the associated civil works – was awarded at the beginning of the week to SKS Communications Limited following a competitive tender competition in accordance with EU and national procurement rules. The value of the contract is approximately €1 million, including VAT at the current rate of 21%.

The system in Limerick will comprise 23 cameras at various locations in the city and will be monitored from Henry Street Garda station. Work will commence immediately with a view to having the system in place and operational by the end of the year. The system will also include, for monitoring purposes, the five cameras that are currently located in Moyross and one camera in Southill, making a total of 29 cameras in all to be monitored from Henry Street Garda station.
The cost of €1 million excludes necessary electrical and refurbishment works that will have to be carried out at the station to accommodate the system. This work will be arranged by the Office of Public Works. The cost also excludes the provision of main power supplies to the cameras. This work will be carried out by the ESB. Co-funding is a feature of Garda CCTV systems and this will be addressed in conjunction with the installation of the system in Limerick.
A local town centre CCTV implementation committee will now be established by the local chief superintendent who will have responsibility for overseeing the implementation of the CCTV system in Limerick. The composition of this committee will include representatives from the following: Garda telecommunications section who will project manage the technical aspects of the system; local crime prevention officers; ESB; local authority; Office of Public Works and local business interests.
