Enda Kenny

Ceist:

448 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has authorised the ?40 million sewerage scheme proposed for Castlebar, County Mayo; if the scheme in its entirety as submitted by consultants on behalf of Mayo County Council has been approved; if not, the changes involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11604/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 447 and 448 together.

The Castlebar environs sewerage scheme – estimated to cost €31.7 million – has been included in my Department's water services investment programme 2002-2004, to start construction this year. I have already consented to some elements of the scheme proceeding as advance works and Mayo County Council's tender report and recommendation for sewer rehabilitation is being examined in my Department. Additional information recently received from the council in relation to a further proposed advance section involving an extension of the outfall for the scheme to a point downstream of the Castlebar and Manulla rivers, is also under consideration in my Department. The council is currently advancing the preparation of tender documents for the DBO element of the scheme, including the treatment works.
