Vol. 553 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

104 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if an extra teacher can be provided immediately for Freshford national school, Kilkenny in view of the increase in student numbers; if the school has supplied all details of increased numbers; and if an immediate decision can be made in this regard. [14265/02]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners.

The enrolment at the school in question was 142 pupils on 30 September 2001. This enrolment entitles the school to a staffing of a principal and four mainstream class teachers for the 2002-03 school year. The school also has the services of a learning support teacher and a resource teacher.

The enrolment requirement for the appointment of a fifth mainstream class teacher in the 2002-03 school year is 146. Unfortunately, the school does not meet this requirement and a fifth teaching post cannot be sanctioned in this case.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

105 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a resource teacher will be provided for a national school (details supplied) in County Mayo. [14266/02]

Ceist:

107 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a carer will be approved for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [14268/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 105 and 107 together.

My Department is currently considering the resources required by the school in question to enable it to cater for its special needs pupils, including the child to whom the Deputy refers. My Department will contact the school authorities shortly in relation to this matter.
