Vol. 553 No. 6

Written Answers. - Programmes for Government.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

103 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the specific proposals he has to meet the commitment given in An Agreed Programme for Government, to implement changes to retention and support policies which will assist schools in areas of significant disadvantage to recruit and retain teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14745/02]

David Stanton

Ceist:

148 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the changes to retention and support policies that he intends to introduce to assist schools in areas of significant disadvantage to recruit and retain teachers as indicated in the programme for Government; the timescale for same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14836/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 103 and 148 together.

The commitment referred to by the Deputies must be implemented during the five year period of the programme for Government.

I have asked officials of my Department to examine how best this commitment can be implemented and to consult with the partners in education in that regard. On completion of that examination and consultation process decisions will be taken on the appropriate implementation measures and the timing of their introduction.
