Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Mary Upton

Ceist:

224 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps he has taken to encourage members of staff in his Department to cycle to work; if his Department provides showering facilities; if his Department will supply cycle helmets to ensure safe cycling; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15258/02]

A number of officers cycle to work on a regular basis and a bicycle shed is available for security purposes. Shower facilities are also available in the Department. The wearing of cycle helmets is a matter for each individual and it would be inappropriate for the Department to supply such items. There would also be a number of other officers in the Department who simply could not avail of the option of cycling to work due to the distance involved or family commitments such as leaving and collecting children at schools and crèches.
