Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Housing Grants.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

1510 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if there is a grant scheme in place for lone parents to build an extension on to their family home; if so, the number of authorities which have used the scheme; and the number of applications which have been granted by Mayo County Council. [16222/02]

There are a number of targeted measures available to households, including lone parents, who wish to secure necessary improvement works to their houses. These measures include the improvement works in lieu of local authority housing scheme which enables local authorities to improve or extend privately owned houses occu pied by an approved applicant for housing as an alternative to the provision of local authority housing. In addition, the scheme of extensions to local authority houses enables local authorities to extend a local authority house to meet the accommodation needs of a household assessed and accepted as in need of re-housing, particularly on the grounds of overcrowding.

Information in relation to activity under the improvement works and extensions schemes for each local authority is published in my Department's quarterly and annual bulletins of housing statistics, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

Question No. 1511 answered with Question No. 1481.
