Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Student Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

1611 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs if a person (details supplied) in County Mayo was approved for the student summer jobs scheme 2002. [15703/02]

The students summer jobs scheme was advertised widely in the national press and in student union publications on 4 April 2002. Posters advertising the scheme together with information leaflets and application forms were sent to student union offices in the various colleges around the country. Forms were also available in all social welfare local offices. The closing date for applications was 28 June 2002.

An application form from the person concerned was received in the Department on 3 July 2002. As this was after the closing date for applications under the scheme, it was disallowed as a late claim.

Ceist:

1612 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the details of the means computation for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo who was refused the student summer jobs scheme. [15722/02]

In order to qualify for participation in the students summer jobs scheme, students must satisfy a means test which is broadly similar to the means test which applies to applicants for unemployment assistance. In assessing means, account is taken of the parents' gross income less income tax, PRSI, superannuation, private health insurance, union fees, rent or mortgage payments and some travel costs. The weekly means of the student are then assessed at 17% of net parental income calculated on this basis.

In the case of the person concerned, the calculation of her weekly means was arrived at as follows:

Gross joint annual income of Parents

43,487.26

less

Tax

7,115.41

P.R.S.I.

1,987.97

Superannuation

V.H.I

1,621.61

Union

148.56

Net Income Divided by 52 weeks

627.17

less

Mortgage

12.95

Travel

19.05

Assessable Income

Total Parental Income =

595.18

Means assessed at 17% =

101.18 per week

As the weekly means exceed the qualifying limit of €83, she was not entitled to participate in the scheme.
