Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

1687 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the reason the old age non-contributory pension of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo was reduced; and if she will provide a complete breakdown of the means assessment in this case. [16106/02]

The person concerned is in receipt of a reduced rate old age non-contributory pension of €95.70 per week. This is based upon means of €62.57 deriving from a British retirement pension, the estimated value of a holding and the value of capital. This pension includes a living alone allowance of €7.70 per week and a fuel allowance of €9 per week payable during the annual heating season from October to April.

A review of his entitlements showed that his British retirement pension had increased to £50.60 sterling a week. The means were reassessed at €79.71 using the appropriate conversion factor. Details of the revised means assessment were notified directly to him at the time. His pension has been reduced to €78.20 per week from 4 October. This rate includes his living alone and fuel allowances.

Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
