Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

570 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the provision of a second level educational facility for Newport, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16041/02]

Michael Ring

Ceist:

648 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the proposed new school at Newport, County Mayo; if a catchment area has been selected; if the school building has commenced; if a contractor has been appointed; and if not, when this work will go out for tender. [16544/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 570 and 648 together.

As with all proposals involving major capital expenditure, it is essential to confirm that the provision of a new second level school in Newport is necessary, having regard to pupil numbers and existing provision in the general area, before it can be allowed to proceed to the next stage. In this context, a review of second level provision in the Newport area is being undertaken by the planning section of my Department and a decision on the Newport proposal will be taken on foot of this review. Pending the outcome of this review, no further action in relation to the development of the school is proposed.
