Vol. 554 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Reports.

Olwyn Enright

Ceist:

604 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science when the report in relation to retention rates in post-primary schools will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16252/02]

My Department is currently in the process of finalising a comprehensive report in relation to retention rates in post-primary schools. The report will deal specifically with pupils who commenced year one of the junior cycle as part of their full-time education and were enrolled in post-primary schools on 30 September 1994.

It is my intention to publish the report, when complete and I hope to be in a position to publish it in the next five to six weeks.

Ceist:

605 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will publish the report on the professional development of second level teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16253/02]

The report to which the Deputy refers is the report of the advisory group on teacher education – post-primary. The advisory group, which was chaired by Professor Kieran Byrne, Director of the Waterford Institute of Technology, and included experts in the area of teacher training and pre-service education, examined all aspects of the current structure for pre-service teacher education in Irish universities.

The final text of the report was received by my Department in July. The report is currently being printed and will be published shortly.

Ceist:

606 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science when the commission on school accommodation will make its report and recommendations on the criteria and procedures for establishing and maintaining provision through the medium of Irish in individual second level schools or clusters of schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16254/02]

The commission on school accommodation has been requested to report and make recommendations on criteria and procedures for establishing and maintaining provision through the medium of Irish in individual second-level schools or clusters of schools.

Written presentations have already been received from interested parties and oral presentations are being facilitated at present by the commissions working group. On completion of the oral presentations and following an analysis of the written and oral submissions, the working group will make a report to the steering committee.

It is anticipated that this report will then be submitted for my consideration early in 2003.
