Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Betting Duty.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

301 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of money spent on gambling here; the total amount gambled on horseracing and greyhound racing, including on-course and off-course betting and the tote; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20481/02]

I have no information available to me on money spent on gambling in the State. I have been informed by the Revenue Commissioners that information is only available in respect of betting duty receipts which are levied on all off-course wagers. The duty yield in 2001, for which a rate of 5% applied, amounted to €68,066,165. Assuming no delay in payment of the bulk of this duty to the Revenue Commissioners, this gives an estimated inclusive figure for off-course wagers in 2001 of approximately €1,429 million. Betting duty does not apply to on-course wagers.
