Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - FÁS Training Programmes.

David Stanton

Ceist:

160 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment further to her recent Dáil statements regarding the former workers of a company (details supplied), the number of workers who were employed at the plant when it ceased production; the number of those workers who were interested in employment or FÁS training; the number of those workers currently in full-time employment; the number who are in training schemes or community employment schemes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20237/02]

At the time the company ceased production, FÁS wrote to approximately 402 – out of a total of 407 – employees in June-July 2001 giving details of FÁS and its services and outlining the process to be implemented in dealing with the cessation. In response to this, a total of 197 employees had registered with FÁS by October 2001 with a view to training and/or securing employment through FÁS.

As at 12 October 2002, 156 former employees were on the FÁS tracking system. Of these, 132 – 84.64% – were gone to work or presumed working – i.e. not claiming social welfare or on FÁS programmes. One individual is currently on a FÁS course. The remainder of the workforce are not on the FÁS tracking system suggesting that they are employed or are not seeking to re-join the workforce.
