Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Salmon Management.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

321 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the proposals he has to ensure that all successful salmon net licence applicants be treated equally whether they fish on rivers or off the coast and be granted an equal number of tags; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21198/02]

The setting of quotas for individual licence holders is a matter for the local fishery district committee in accordance with the criteria set out in the wild salmon and sea trout tagging scheme regulations 2002. Each fishery district committee consists of six members including the chief executive officer of the local regional fisheries board and five other persons nominated as follows: two by the commercial salmon licence holders in that district, one each by the chief executive officer and chairman of the local regional fisheries board and one by Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

My Department has asked the National Salmon Commission in consultation with the Marine Institute, Bord Iascaigh Mhara and the commercial and recreational fishing interests to review the measures in place for the management of salmon, in particular the deciding of quotas applicable to individual licence holders and make recommendations to me as they see fit for 2003 and beyond.

Question No. 322 answered with Question No. 318.
