Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Ciarán Cuffe

Ceist:

431 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his plans to establish a cross-sectoral initiative such as the United Kingdom's national resource and waste forum to promote sustainable management of waste; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21416/02]

I understand that the UK national resource and waste forum was established in 2001 as a cross-sectoral initiative, with the endorsement of the UK Government, to promote public engagement in the sustainable management of waste.

While I have no plans to establish a corresponding forum here, the programme for Government proposes a number of initiatives, including the establishment a recycling consultative forum, a national waste prevention programme and a market development group which will be widely representative and will deal with many issues common to the UK national resource and waste forum. These structures were identified in the Government policy statement, Preventing and Recycling Waste: Delivering Change, published in March 2002.
