Ceist:404 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport the positive effect of the revised road signs programme which he initiated in the city; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23773/02]

The provision of traffic signs in any area is the responsibility of the local authority. In carrying out that responsibility local authorities must have regard to the traffic signs manual or directions issued by me and, in relation to regulatory traffic signs, the traffic signs regulations made under the Road Traffic Acts.
Dublin City Council recently devised signage proposals for the purpose of the determination of orbital routes in the city. The initial proposals were not in compliance with the provisions of the traffic signs manual and were not proceeded with. Revised proposals for orbital signage have now been submitted to my Department by Dublin City Council. My Department is now consulting with the city council, the Department of the Environment and Local Government and the National Roads Authority, on the new proposals. When that consultation process is completed I will authorise the use of the resulting new signage system.
Subject to compliance with the general parameters that will be set in such directions, the content of the signs provided by any local authority will be a matter for their determination.
