Vol. 558 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disposal of Animal Carcases.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

77 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the way in which he proposes to dispose of specified risk material; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24125/02]

Specified risk material, SRM, which includes the organs defined as such under EU legislation, is removed under controlled conditions from the carcasses of bovine and ovine animals at slaughter. This material is segregated and sent to one of three designated SRM rendering plants where it is rendered to EU standards and subsequently exported for incineration/ destruction at approved facilities in Germany. The complete process, from removal from carcasses at the abattoir to rendering and subsequent export, is carried out under the control of the veterinary inspectorate of my Department.
