Vol. 558 No. 5

Written Answers. - Arts Funding.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

291 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the number of theatres which received State funding in 2002; the number from which his Department received submissions for funding; the amount of funding provided by his Department for such applications, be it through the county councils or his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25061/02]

The Arts Council is the independent statutory agency through which current funding is provided to arts venues, including theatres. Accordingly, the Deputy should address any specific inquiries he may have in that regard directly to the council.

My Department has provided capital funding for theatres both under the ACCESS Scheme (Arts and Culture Capital Enhancement Support Scheme), which runs from 2001 to 2004, and outside of this scheme.

Currently, capital grants to 13 theatres totalling approximately €10.2 million are approved and part-paid or eligible for payment (see following list).
