Vol. 558 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

John Deasy

Ceist:

148 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Transport the measures he has put in place to increase the number of driving tests to assist drivers with provisional licences who will no longer be able to drive unaccompanied from January 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23993/02]

Since July 2000, 25 additional driver testers have been recruited. The additional capacity enabled my Department to reach its customer service target of ten weeks average waiting time earlier this year. My Department continues to provide early test appointments for candidates requiring an urgent test.

At present, the driver testing service has a potential capacity to deliver some 210,000 driving tests annually.
