Vol. 558 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rail Services.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

151 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Transport his proposals in regard to the transport needs of the port of Waterford (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25228/02]

The Deputy's question relates to rail services between Waterford and Limerick and Rosslare. I have no proposals from Iarnród Éireann to close any part of the rail system, either in the Waterford area or elsewhere. It is my stated position that future investment in the railways will be guided by the outcome of the strategic rail review which is currently nearing completion. The primary purpose of the review is to provide the Government with a basis for establishing a strategic policy framework for the future development of the rail sector in Ireland. Central to the review is an examination of the potential for rail freight services.

As I have stated previously, my position is that no decisions should be taken on freight services until the completion of the strategic rail review. I have made this clear to the chairman of CIE and the board of the company has decided to await the outcome of the review before making any decisions on the matter.
