Vol. 559 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

109 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 748 of 9 October 2002, the reason for the delay in replying to same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26245/02]

The necessary inquiries have now been completed regarding the provision of school transport for the family referred to by the Deputy.

Eligibility for school transport is determined by distance from the nearest school. In order to be eligible for free transport children must live over two miles from and be attending the nearest school.

Under the terms of the school transport scheme, the family concerned are eligible for transport to another school. Where a child is attending a school other than the nearest, it is necessary to obtain the written agreement of the board of management of the nearest school to the provision of fare-paying transport.
An official form for this purpose has already issued to the family. As soon as the written agreement of the board of management of the nearest school is completed and returned to my Department, the family may avail of fare-paying transport to the school attended.
