Vol. 561 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Partnership.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

175 Ms Shortall asked the Taoiseach the consideration he has given to granting formal recognition to senior citizens as social partners, in view of the large number of pensioners and the need to ensure that their voice is heard in the partnership process; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4301/03]

A number of organisations, including those representing pensioners and older people have applied for inclusion in social partnership. Consideration of how best to do this, particularly in the context of the commitment in the programme for Government to examine ways of maximising both the efficiency of the process and the contribution of the diverse and vibrant community and voluntary sectors, has been taking place in parallel with the sustaining progress negotiations. It is an inherent part of the process that any changes proposed will be discussed with the relevant social partner pillar. I expect to be able to conclude these considerations shortly.
