Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

David Stanton

Ceist:

267 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of children who have had home tuition withdrawn following the recent review of home tuition cases in the special education section; the reason for such withdrawal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12869/03]

The home tuition scheme is intended to cater for pupils who are unable to attend school on a regular basis because of a grave medical ailment. It may also be provided to pupils who are awaiting an appropriate educational placement. A recent review of home tuition cases involving children attending a special junior school catering for children with autism revealed that ten children were in receipt of home tuition grants. The school in question has an enrolment of 24 children and a staffing complement of five teachers and 13 special needs assistants. The home tuition was withdrawn with effect from the end of April.
