203 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her Department will increase the number of detectives in the Competition Authority in view of the importance of protecting consumers from profiteering through anti-competitive practices; and if she will make a statement on the matter. In 2000 Deloitte & Touche in 2000 carried out a comprehensive review of the authority's records. Following this report I significantly increased the authority's staff and financial resources.
The increase included approval for the appointment of three gardaí as well as additional professional staff. Since 1999 the authority's staff numbers have almost doubled, from 25 to 47 at present.
I am happy with the authority's current staffing level and resources. Nevertheless it shall be kept under review.
