Vol. 567 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

248 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the decision of the primary staffing appeals board to remove the extra teacher which had been allowed to Gaelscoil Sairséal, Limerick, due to its special conditions, as referred to in Department circular 19/02, particularly as the circumstances which allowed the school the extra teacher in the first place have not changed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13589/03]

An independent appeals board was established to adjudicate on appeals from boards of management on mainstream staffing teacher allocations in primary schools. The appeals board operates independently of the Minister and the Department. A circular outlining these new appeal procedures issued to all primary schools.

The staffing of Gaelscoil Sairséal was considered by the appeals board on 9 April 2003 and the board of management was advised of the decision of the board on 10 April 2003. The board of management has raised issues in writing in relation to the appeals criteria and this correspondence will be brought to the attention of the appeals board.
