Vol. 567 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

253 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science when the proposed extension of Gorey community school will be sanctioned; and when construction will commence. [13771/03]

An application for additional accommodation at Gorey Community School is currently under consideration in my Department's planning section. As a first step an examination of all relevant issues is undertaken with a view to determining the long-term accommodation needs of the school. Factors considered in this examination include demographic trends and housing developments. When this analysis is complete the school's long-term projected enrolment will provide a basis for consideration under my Department's building programme.

Ceist:

254 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science the way in which his Department plans to cater for the growing future needs of Gorey, County Wexford; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the town's three primary schools are full to capacity, and a decision regarding future provision is urgently needed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13772/03]

My Department's planning section is examining educational provision at primary level in Gorey. Factors which will be considered include population growth, demographic trends, current and projected enrolments, recent and planned housing developments and the capacity of existing schools, if any, to meet the demand for places.

Having considered these factors, a decision will be made on the means by which any emerging needs should be met.
