Vol. 567 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

384 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of radar speed detection guns available to the Garda by district; the number of these which were operational by district in the month of December 2002; the number that are currently operational by district; the reason some are not operational; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13817/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the total number of hand-held speed detection devices available to the Garda Síochána is 368. These detection devices are allocated on a divisional basis as set out in the following table. However, from time to time these devices require calibration and-or repair. The number of devices operational is not readily available and the compilation of this information would involve a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.

The Garda Síochána also operates a range of other speed detection equipment, including in-car and motor cycle detection cameras, mobile speed detection units, i.e. GATSOs, and fixed speed cameras.
