Vol. 568 No. 5

Written Answers. - State Examinations.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

301 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on concerns expressed regarding one of the leaving certificate mathematics papers; if, in the context of discussions at the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Science on the setting up of the examinations commission, he has a role in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16974/03]

On foot of a Government decision I established the State Examinations Commission on 6 March 2003 with statutory responsibility for operational matters relating to the certificate examinations. This function includes the setting of papers and the assessment and certification of results.

I am concerned to ensure that the operation of the system continues to be governed by principles of quality, equity and fairness, and maintains a high degree of public confidence in the objectivity and integrity of its processes and procedures. In that context, I have been advised by the State Examinations Commission that question 8(c) of the leaving certificate higher level mathematics paper 2 is within the scope of the syllabus, under further calculus and series.
