Vol. 568 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

373 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Transport the Department with responsibility for the privatisation and roll-out of fixed speed cameras following his recent announcement; the timescale involved for tendering and roll out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16483/03]

I had discussions recently with my colleague, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and senior Garda officers on the question of the engagement of the private sector in the operation of speed cameras, with a view in particular to facilitating best use of garda resources in the enforcement of road traffic law. I have asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Garda authorities to bring forward proposals for the provision and management by the private sector of a more comprehensive network of speed cameras so that we can build on the successful introduction of penalty points for speeding. I have indicated that I will urgently consider measures that may be sought by the Garda authorities to facilitate better detection and enforcement of speeding offences including advancing amendments, if necessary, to the road traffic legislative code.
